More Information

Jahn Gulbis is the eldest son of Lawize & Indriks Gulbis. Lawize was a sister to Anne, who married Geddert Rozentals/Rozenbergs (the parents of Dāvis Rozenwalds/Rozenbergs). That makes Dāvis and Jahn 1st cousins.

Jahn was born in 1816 at Baž Kauliņu farm in Zalenieki and had a twin sister named Anne, who died in the following year as a baby.

In 1826, Jahn was still living at Baž Kauliņu farm with this siblings (Kristap, Jahn, Ans, Greete and Liese) and parents (who were then managing the farm). Then in 1833 his family had moved to Daukšas farm.

In 1839, Jahn married Lawize Freymann at Zalenieku Lutheran Church. He is still living at Daukšas farm where his aunt, Grieta Vigants, is the manager along with her husband David Vigants.

By 1841, Jahn and Lawize have moved to Welze farm and are listed as being the managers there. This map shows the location of Welze (Velces, Daukšas and Baž Kauliņu).

They have 3 children while living at Welze farm (NOTE: there was another child, Anne, born in 1843 but I have not located her baptism record. Although she is listed in the 1857 Revision List):

  1. Janis, born 1841 at Welze farm, Zalenieku:

Janis died in 1878 at the age of 37 and it states that he is a widow. This death record however is a little strange. The entry number ‘101’ has been crossed out and the next entry is also numbered as 101. I do not know what this means.

By 1855, Jahn and his family are living back at Daukšas farm.

Two years later in 1857, Jahn and his family are still living at Daukšas farm. Some of Jahn’s relatives are also at this farm. His aunt, Grieta Vigants, was the former manager. His uncle Ans Budien and his family are living there. And his cousin Dāvis Rozenvalds is now the current manager.

This 1857 Revision List shows that the family was living at Puhtrehn farm in 1850.

I do not know when Jannis Gulbis or his wife died. I also have not researched the marriages, children or deaths of Jannis and Lawize’s 4 children. More research is needed here.
