More Information
Lawize was the eldest child of Klawe & Trine of Baž Kauliņu farm in Zalenieki. This family and their descendants were the managers of this farm for many years.
Lawize is an elder sister to Anne, Dāvis Rozenbergs’s mother and Trine, Dāvis Rozenbergs’s step-mother and aunt. Lawize’s siblings were as follows:
- Liese, born 1795, Baž Kauliņu farm
- Greete (married Vigants), born 1797, Baž Kauliņu farm, died 1868, Daukšu farm
- Kristaps Budien, born 1800, Baž Kauliņu farm, died after 1857
- Trine (marries Geddert Rozentals/Rozenbergs), born 1803, Baž Kauliņu farm, died 1856, Baž Kauliņu farm
- Anne (marries Geddert Rozentals/Rozenbergs), born 1805, Baž Kauliņu farm, died 1832, Reņču Jahna farm, Jekabnieku
- Ans Budien, born 1808, Baž Kauliņu farm, died after 1857
- Janis, born 1811, Baž Kauliņu farm, died 1811, Baž Kauliņu farm
The first evidence I have for Lawize is from the 1797 Farm Revision List for Baž Kauliņu farm. She is listed here as being 4 years old which would make her birth year 1793. Online records for this year are not available. This document for Baž Kauliņu farm lists her parents, “Clawe & Triene” as the managers of the farm with their 3 children: Lavize-age 4, Liese-age 2 and little Grete-age 3 months. Lawize’s paternal grandmother, Greete, is also living with them.
Lawize was confirmed in Zalenieku Lutheran Church in 1804.
Lawize married a man named Indriks sometime before 1811. I have not located a marriage record for them.
Child 1: their first child was born in 1811, a daughter named Greete:
In 1834, Greete married Janis from Breeschu Dawe farm in Bewert-Swehthof. He was the son of Janna & Ilse. I have not followed up with the family and do not know what surname they took or whether they had children or not.
Child 2: Lawize and Indriks’s 2nd child was a daughter named Lihse in 1813. Lihse is still alive in the 1833 Revision List for Daukšas farm, Zalenieku but I have not tracked her past this date.
Child 3 & 4: In 1816, Lawize and Indriks have twins, Jahn and Anne. Unfortunately, Anne died in 1817, just a baby.
Jannis/Jahn married Lawize Freyman in 1839 and they had 3 children. Please click on his name to see more details about his family.
Child 5: Lawize and Indriks’s 5th child was a son named Kristaps. He was born in 1819.
Kristaps married Lawize Swivert in 1843 and they had 6 children. Please click on his name to find out more about his family.
Child 6: In 1822, Lawize and Indriks have their 6th child, another son named Janis. Janis was confirmed in 1838 in Zalenieku Lutheran Church but I don’t know what happened to him after that. He was born at Baž Kauliņu farm even though his confirmation record says he was born at Daukšas farm.
Child 7: Lawize and Indriks had a 7th child around 1825. He was named Ans. Records for 1825/1826 are not in good condition so I have not found his baptism record. But he was listed in the 1826 Revision List for Baž Kauliņu farm as being 1-year-old. Ans married Lihse Seemels in 1847 and they had 6 children. Ans and his family remain managers of Baž Kauliņu farm for many years. Please click on his name to find out more about his family.
Child 8: In 1835, Lawize and Indriks have a daughter, also named Lawize. The family had made a move by this time. They are no longer the managers of Baž Kauliņu farm. They are now living at Daukšas farm with Lawize’s sister, Grieta Vigants. This daughter Lawize never married or had children and died in 1902.
Child 9: And the 9th and final child of Lawize and Indriks Gulbis was a son named Dave. He was born in 1837 at Daukšas farm. This is the first record where Lawize and Indriks are using the surname, Gulbis. Two of Dave’s godparents are ‘Jahnis Rosenthal’ and ‘Dahrte Rozenwald’. I do not know if these are relatives of Geddert Rozentals/Rozenbergs. More study is necessary here. Another godparent is ‘Dahrte Wigand (Vigants)’. I assume this is a relative of Dave Vigants but again more research is needed.
In 1855, Dave Gulbis is living at Baž Kauliņu farm with his widowed mother, Lawize, and his older brother Ans is the manager.
And in 1857, he is living again at Daukšas farm. He is living there with various family members and his older cousin, Dāvis Rozenwalds/Rozenbergs, is the manager. I don’t know what happened to Dave Gulbis after 1857.
That is it for the children of Lawize and Indriks Gulbis. So now back to evidence for the family as a whole and Lawize Gulbis in particular.
The family is listed in the 1826 Revision List for Baž Kauliņu farm. Lawize and her husband, Indriks, are now the managers since Lawize’s father, Klawe had died the previous year. They are living there with their first 6 children.
There is another Farm Census list in 1833. At this time Lawize and her family are no longer living at and managing Baž Kauliņu farm. They are now living with Lawize’s sister, Grieta Vigants and her husband Dave, who are managing Daukšas farm. They are listed in this list with all their children except the final two who haven’t been born yet. (NOTE: the child in the list named ‘Juhle’ is a mistake. That should be ‘Jahn’.)
Lawize’s husband, Indriks, died in December 1838 at Daukšas farm, leaving Lawize with young children to take care of.
In 1855, Lawize is living back at Baž Kauliņu farm where her son, Ans, is managing. Also living here in 1855 is her youngest son, Dave Gulbis as well as Geddert Rozentals/Rozenbergs and his wife Trine. Trine is Lawize’s sister. (NOTE: their name is listed as Grossman but I believe that is a mistake and it should be ‘Rozental’)
The last record I have of Lawize Gulbis is from the 1857 Revision List for Baž Kauliņu farm. She is living here at the age of 67 with her son Ans and his family, who are managing the farm at this point. Also living here in 1857 is Lawize’s brother, Kristap Budien, and his family.
I have not found a death record for Lawize Gulbis. But records from Zalenieku Church for 1859-1861 are not available online so she probably died during that time.
