More Information

Dāvis Rozenbergs’s mother, Anne, was from Baž Kauliņu farm in Zalenieki. Her parents were Klawe & Trine, the managers of this farm. They would not have been the owners because at that time Latvian peasants were not allowed to own land. The elites were the Baltic German landlords and they owned all the land. The Latvian-speaking peasants were bound in a state of serfdom to the farms of the landlords. But the landlords would have had dozens or even hundreds of small farmsteads on their land. Each farmstead needed to have a ‘manager’ or ‘saimnieks. These managers were usually trustworthy and slightly more educated Latvian-speaking serfs. This family was one of those families. They would have enjoyed a slightly higher status and standard of living than families who were just farm-workers or ‘bandinieks’.

Klawe & Trine were born in the 1760s or 1770s but I have not identified their baptism records so I do not know exactly when or where they were born. They would have been married sometime before 1793 since their first child was born in that year. Unfortunately marriage records for that time are not available online and are possibly not available at all.

The earliest record of this family is in the 1797 Russian farm census that was conducted 2 years after the Duchy of Courland became part of the Russian Empire. The 1797 census for Baž Kauliņu farm lists both males and females living there and their ages. Klawe & Trine are listed first since they were the managing family of this farm.

The family is listed as follows:

  • Klawe, manager, 34 years old (this would make his birth year 1763)
  • Trine, Klawe’s wife, 22 years old (this would make her birth year 1775)
  • Lawiese, their daughter, 4 years old (this would make her birth year 1793)
  • Liese, their daughter, 2 years old
  • Grete, their daughter, 3 months old
  • Grete, Klawe’s mother, 70 years old (this would make her birth year 1727)

Although I do not have baptism records for Klawe & Trine’s first three children I do have confirmation records for their daughters Lawize (Gulbis) and Grieta (Vigants). This may mean that their second child, Liese, died as a child:

1804 Confirmation record for Lawize: https://raduraksti.arhivi.lv/objects/1:4:11:2055:2541:27259#&gid=1&pid=7
1810 Confirmation record for Greeta: https://raduraksti.arhivi.lv/objects/1:4:11:2055:2541:27261#&gid=1&pid=6

The next written record for this family is the 1811 Revision List for Baž Kauliņu farm. This list only listed males unfortunately. Again, this family is listed first because they are the managers:

  • Clave/Klawe, manager, 48 years old
  • Kristop, his son, 8 years old
  • Ans, his son, 1 1/2 years old
  • Janne, 6 months old

Klawe & Trine’s baby, Jannis, died in the following year. The death record shows his name as being ‘Klawe’ like his father, but this is a mistake.

Sometime before 1811 Klawe & Trine’s eldest daughter, Lawize, married a man named Indriks. They had 9 children between 1811 and 1837 and the family ends up taking the surname ‘Gulbis’. In the 1826 Revision List Indriks and Lawize are the new farm managers of Baž Kauliņu farm. I think they must have been the managers until maybe 1830. Then sometime between 1830 and 1832 they move over to Daukšas farm where Lawize’s sister, Grieta was living with her husband Dawe (Vigants). Lawize and Indriks’s son Ans, would be the manager of Baž Kauliņu farm in the 1857 Revision List. That means that this farm was in the hands of this family for many decades.

Klawe & Trine’s daughter Greita married a man named Dave and they end up taking the name ‘Vigants’. Grieta and Dave move to Daukšas farm around 1829 and eventually end up owning the farm and passing it on to their nephew, Dāvis Rozenvalds/Rozenbergs.

Klawe & Trine eldest son, Kristops marries sometime before 1824. His wife is named Trine, born in 1806 and died in 1843. He marries again in 1843 to a woman named Karliene. Kristops fathered 4 children and the family took the surname ‘Budien’.

Klawe & Trine’s second son, Ans, also took the surname ‘Budien’. He married Darte Strasdin in 1836 and Lihse Libert in 1856. He fathered two children.

Klawe died in 1825. His death record states that he was 85 years old but I think that is probably not accurate and he was younger than that.

The year after Klawe’s death there was another farm Revision List. In this 1826 list it shows that the old manager, Klawe, had died in 1825. It also shows that Klawe’s son, Kristop, had moved to the neighbouring farm and his son Ans is still living at this farm and is 15 years old.

The new managers are Indriks and Lawize, Klawe’s daughter and son-in-law. In this 1826 list they are living here with 4 sons and 2 daughters. Also living here at this time is Klawe’s widow, Trine (aged 60) and their 2 unmarried daughters, Trine and Anne.

I am not sure where Trine lived from 1826 until her death in 1845. I presume she spent those years at Baž Kauliņu farm but she may have spent time at Daukšas farm since so many members of this family went back and forth between these two farms. Trine died in 1845 having lived into her 70s.
