More Information
Ans Gulbis was the 6th child of Lawize and Indriks Gulbis. He was born in either 1825 or 1826 but due to records in bad condition I have not found his baptism. He was born at Baž Kauliņu farm in Zalenieku where his family were the managers.
In the 1826 Revision List the family is still living at Baž Kauliņu farm. Ans’s parents, Lawize and Indriks, are the new managers. They had taken over managing after the death of Kristaps’s grandfather, Klawe. Ans is 1 year old here and is living with his maternal extended family. His siblings are Janne, Kristap, Jahn, Greete and Liese.
In the 1833 Farm List Ans has moved with his family to Daukšas farm. The are living there with Ans’s maternal aunt, Grieta Vigants, who is managing this farm at the time. (NOTE: It shows Ans’s birth year as 1827. But this cannot be correct because he is 1 year old in the 1826 Revision list. His real birth year is either 1825 or 1826.)
In 1847, Ans marries Lihse Seemels in Zalenieku Lutheran Church.
I do not think that Ans is the manager of Baž Kauliņu farm at the time of his marriage because is is listed as being a ‘young man’ not a ‘manager’. I am not sure who managed this farm between 1830 and 1847. But by the time Ans and Lihse have their first child in 1849 Ans is listed as being the manager of Baž Kauliņu farm. Ans and Lihse have 6 children, 2 of which die in infancy. (please see baptism and death records for these children above)
Ans and Lihse remain the managers of Baž Kauliņu farm for many years.
Here they are in the 1855 Farm list. Living with them are Ans’s younger brother, Dave Gulbis, Ans’s widowed mother, Lawize Gulbis, Geddert Rozentals/Rozenbergs and his wife Trine (NOTE: they are listed with the name ‘Grossman’ which is incorrect). Trine is Ans’s aunt. They are also living there with three people with the last name ‘Radsin’. This is the surname for Geddert’s third wife, Anna Radzin/Rudzis that he will marry in 1859/1860.
Here they are as managers in the 1857 Revision List for Baž Kauliņu farm. Also living with them at this time are is Kristaps Budien (Ans’s maternal uncle) as well as Lawize, Ans’s widowed mother.
Ans’s wife, Lihse, died in 1886. That is date on her gravestone in Zalenieku Cemetery. Death records for those years are missing. Ans Gulbis died in 1893. His death record says he is the ‘former manager’ of Baž Kauliņu farm. I don’t know when he stopped being the manager and who took over. Did it stay in the Gulbis family?
I have not researched the children of Ans and Lihse. Except for their daughter, Lawize, who died in 1877 and is also buried in the family plot with her parents, I don’t know what happened to the other children. More research is needed here.
